SAHAS, an NGO that functions under the Somaiya Medical Trust, has been long associated with ‘The Somaiya HIV Project’ that works closely with the HIV infected person and their families. Most of its activities involve closely interacting with the community, conducting educational workshops and, providing health care services and medical assistance to them.
Project Mehendi is a similar initiative taken by the Somaiya Social Cell under the guidance of SAHAS. The primary aim is to provide a means of earning livelihood to the women affected by HIV/AIDS. As the name suggests, the unique art of henna application or mehendi has been adopted to help these women develop skills that may provide them with a source of income. Currently a professional henna artist has been appointed to train a group of 7 women in the same and also various workshops are held to equip them with creative, communicational, marketing and entrepreneurial skills.
Over the course of time they will receive assistance in working independently and building up a client base. The members also assist them in setting up kiosks at events, college festivals, malls, etc. Recently the team successfully setup Mehendi kiosks in Inorbit Mall, Malad and RMall, Mulund, and at the Somaiya college campus during festivals namely Nostalgia and Melange.
SIFE, Somaiya has always believed in empowering communities and achieving more sustainable outcomes. And, Project Mehendi is a unique step in this direction. It has not just helped these women in overcoming the social stigma attached to HIV/AIDS but has also brought back hope and dignity in their lives by providing them with an opportunity to be economically independent.
